  • Description based on first issue. Text of chapter heading on leaf R3v reads: "Das .XIII. capitte. dis funffte[n] tractatz seit vo[n] de[n] bruche[n] der sloss oder hufft." Text of line 14, col. 1, leaf V1r reads: "Mumie iedes eyn lot." Date in colophon reads: ".M.ccc.xc.vii."
  • There are several variants of this edition, which had two distinct issues. The second issue, first state, corrected minor errors in the text, but not the date of publication, expanded the content of the fourth tract, and included two additional woodcut illustrations. The second issue, second state finally corrected the date of publication to read ".M.cccc.xcvii."--Cf. Sudhoff, K. "Brunschwigs Anatomie" in Archiv für Geschichte der Medizin, 1908, Bd. I, S. 41ff
  • Appended to many copies of the second issue is a 6-leaf work entitled "Anathomia", which featured a woodcut illustration of a skeleton. This work was also issued separately.--Cf. GW 5593, Anm. 2

Generally, they depict the master surgeon, his apprentices, his patients, and his instruments in a variety of scenarios.   • A typescript leaf describing the "first impression of the first edition" is pasted on front flyleaf. The text draws heavily from Sigerist, Henry E. A fifteenth century surgeon: Hieronymus Brunschwig and his work. New York: Ben Abramson, 1946.
  • Purchased by the College of Physicians of Philadelphia on 2 April 1935.
  • Bound in quarter calf over wooden boards, with 4 metal clasp plates (not original) on fore-edges of front and back boards. Clasps are wanting. Housed in clamshell.
