A galvanic (direct current) battery would be placed between the rigis and flexible portiond of the handle and when contact was completed by depressing theflexible portion, an electical current would pass through the instrument to achieve cautery. This particular bougie object was used for abortion procedures, presumably to try and stem cervical bleeding
