Note
  • Imperfect: Leaf b2 wanting; leaf aa1 (Tractatus de urinis t.p) supplied from Goff H-489 [Strasbourg: Johann Prüss, after 1499 (i.e., ca. 1507)]. In addition to the expected woodcut on verso (Schramm XV, no. 1098), it also bears a woodcut illustration on its recto of three men standing over a sick man in bed.
  • Not rubricated. Occasional red coloring added to woodcuts of animals.
  • Numerous ms. annotations in at least 3 early hands: front flyleaves bear pharmaceutical measurement charts in Latin and Dutch; plant names written in Dutch by each illustration; table entries underlined and annotated in medieval Latin.
  • Ownership incription in Latin of Johannes Epconides on rear flyleaf.
  • Two booksellers' catalogue entries pasted on front flyleaf. One seems to describe edition in hand as bound in vellum and lacking both leaves b2 and aa1. It attributes printing to Renatus Beck. According to pencilled note on rear flyleaf, dated Jan. 11, 1890, this entry may be from a Quaritch catalogue.
  • Ms. note in ink, in the hand of J. Stockton Hough, on rear flyleaf: "The other edit. I have set with same types. Both appear to be by same printer, both Argentorati. The plate on Fol. 1b seems to be one of Gruninger's. Hence books is [sic] Argentorati {Renat. Beck, Johan Pryss, or Johan. Gruninger} 1495-8 circa." Index card entry, also in Hough's hand, with stamp of the Stockton-Hough Library laid-in.
  • Presented to the College of Physicians of Philadelphia by John Ashhurst, Jr., M.D., 19 Nov. 1900.
  • Bound in half modern vellum over white cloth boards, with dark red Morocco gold-stamped spine label, bearing date: circa 1490.
  • Leaf size: 285 x 194 mm.; trimmed with some loss of marginal ms. annotations; minor insect damage and damp-staining throughout; with a few torn corners of leaves repaired.
  • Photostat NOT available.
