- Remarks: In the late 1840's, J. Marion Sims invented his speculum that is virtually unchanged in appearance since its first introduction. I was the first major improvement in the design of the vaginal speculum since the earliest known example dating back to the years BC.Sims and Graves specula are the progenitors of most of the modern specula in use today. The simple bivalve (Grave's, and it's modifications) is what is used in most routine Gyn exams. The Sim's is use more commonly in the OR for retraction
