Context of A Case of human vivisection : a poor, feeble-minded woman, suffering from an incurable disease, but with no danger of immediate death, seeks admission to a hospital where she hopes to spend her remaining days in peace : her disease is uncommon, and allured by the prospect of a brilliant article to which his name may be attached, the physician is led to make some experiments, before the conclusion of which the patient dies : she had consented to the experiments, doubtless with the desperate hope that scientific instruments in the hands of learned professors might somewhat prolong her life
