- Scrapbook consisting of portraits, letters, clippings, documents, admission cards, etc. illustrating and supplementing Carson's History of the Medical Department of the University of Pennsylvania (Philadelphia : Lindsay and Blakiston, 1869)
- In addition to material relevant to the history of the Medical Department, and more generally to the history of the University, the scrapbook contains items relating to the University of Edinburgh and other medical institutions (primarily in Philadelphia), learned societies (including the American Philosophical Society); the letters contain information beyond medicine, e.g. on chemistry, botany and occasionaly on historical and social topics. Among the large number of letter writers William Hall (described as a surgeon, Philadelphia, 1706), Benjamin Franklin (facsimile), Cadwallader Coldon, John Morgan (10 or more letters), William Hewson, John Redman, Benjamin Rush (6 letters), Joseph Priestley, Benjamin Smith Barton, Caspar Wistar (4 letters), P.S. Physick (4), John Redman Coxe, William P.C. Barton (3), J.G. Dorsey (6), Samuel L. Mitchell, Benjamin Silliman, Robert Hare (4), N. Chapman (4), George B. Wood (many), Samuel Jackson (4), William Pepper (3), J.K. Mitchell, plus various letter to Joseph Carson (including several from Joseph Leidy, Henry H. Smith and Alfred Stillé). Also included are the printed book and book auction announcements, and clippings dealing with a variety of topics. One letter in v. 6 by M. Leib briefly describes the yellow fever in Philadelphia, 1797
- Biographical or historical data
- Joseph Carson, Philadelphia, Pa., physician and educator, was born on 19 April 1808. He married (1) Mary Goddard, in 1841, and then (2) Sarah Hollingsworth, in 1848, by whom he had four children. Joseph Carson died on 30 December 1876. After attending the University of Pennsylvania and receiving an A.B. in 1826 and M.D. in 1830, Carson became a resident at Pennsylvania Hospital. He was a physician at Pennsylvania Hospital, 1849-1854, professor of materia medica at the Philadelphia College of Pharmacy, 1836-1850, and professor of materia medica and therapeutics at the University of Pennsylvania, 1850-1876. In 1869, he published A history of the Medical Department of the University of Pennsylvania. Joseph Carson became a Fellow of the College of Physicians of Philadelphia in 1838 and was also a member of the Philadelphia Medical Society, the Academy of Natural Sciences, and the American Philosophical Society.
