- Remarks: Though patented in 1891, it is likely that Thomas Grave invented his speculum in the 1870's.The interesting thing about the Grave's is that, if you take it apart and reverse the upper blade, it turns into a Sim's type speculum. That is part of the original design purpose.These two specula are the progenitors of most of the modern specula in use today. The simple bivalve (Grave's, and it's modifications) is what is used in most routine Gyn exams. The Sim's is use more commonly in the OR for retraction
