  • "The woodcut on the title represents Brunellus the ass, Galienus the physician, who advises him to travel, and a jester standing on one foot between them, holding up a mirror in which the ass's head is reflected. The poem, which was written by a monk of Canterbury in the 12th century, is an amusing satire which enjoyed a long popularity."--Cf. Pollard, Hawkins cat., p. 84

  • Rubrication: one initial, capital strokes, and underlines supplied in red.
  • Bound in full French brown morocco with blind-stamped panels on covers and spine; five raised bands on spine; gold-stamped cover edges and turn-ins with dragon motifs; title stamped in gold on spine ("Brunellus in speculo stultos"). Blue silk marker. All edges gilt. Housed in a maroon slipcase.
  • The woodcut in CPP copy has been partly lightly hand-colored.
  • Leaf size: 199 x 129 mm. Title leaf mended at lower inside margin; a few other leaves neatly mended at outside margin. Bookseller's description pasted to front free endpaper.
