- Summary
- The poor boy/rich girl story features Dick Powell as a desk clerk hired by once-rich Mrs. Prentiss to squire her daughter (Gloria Stuart) for one last fling before she marries wacky millionaire Hugh Herbert who meanwhile gets tangled with a real gold digger, the conniving steno, Glenda Farrell. Every musical must have a show, and so Adolphe Menjou, as a volatile Russian director, bilks Mrs. Prentiss for a bundle with his "summer spectacle." Busby Berkeley shows himself the "master of scenic prestidigitation" in two productions. In "The Words Are in My Heart" number, dozens of revolving pianos are wheeled through ingenious formations before joining to form a dance floor for a lone ballerina. But the real triumph is "The Lullaby of Broadway" where Wini Shaw's face slowly emerges from a black set as a white dot that finally fills the screen and dissolves into an aerial view of Manhattan
