Biographical or historical data
The New Mexico Insane Asylum was established by a legislative act in 1889 (1889 Laws of N.M., Chp. 138, Sec. 40). In 1955 a constitutional amendment changed the name to New Mexico State Hospital (1955 Laws of N.M., Constitutional Amendment No. 5). In 1968 a legislative act established the Department of Hospitals and Institutions and placed the State Hospital within that Department (1968 Laws of N.M., Chp. 17, Sec. 2). In 1977 a legislative act abolished the Department of Hospitals and Institutions and transferred its functions to the Health Services Division of the of the newly-established Health and Environment Department (1977 Laws of N.M., Chp. 253, Sec. 4-5). In 1991 a legislative act divided the Health and Environment Department into two separate agencies: the Department of Health; and the Environment Department (1991 Laws of N.M, Chp. 25, Sec. 14). The same 1991 legislative act transferred the functions of the Health Services Division to the newly-established Department of Health (1991 Laws of N.M., Chp. 25, Sec. 16). The New Mexico State Hospital is located in Las Vegas, New Mexico.
