3 lower dorsal and 4 upper lumbar vertebrae, with portions of the three lower ribs of both sides. Fracture of the twelfth dorsal and first lumbar vertebrae. Partial repair. The bodies of the two fractured vertebrae are compressed and have coalesced. The intervertebral discs separating them have disappeared and pressure has forced the bodies of these vertebrae backwards so as to obliterate the vertebral canal. The loss of substance anteriorly has allowed the columns above to bend forward 40 degrees. The vertebral column is fixed in this position by permanent callus thrown out so as to envelope the two fractured vertebrae and to bind them to those adjoining. This callus is strong, slightly rough and finely porous and has existed no very great length of time, although perhaps for a few months. The spinal cord was evidently compressed and subsequently obliterated by this accident. The surface of the vertebral canal above and below are smooth. Vertical section shows the anterior and upper edge of the first lumbar vertebra situated posterior to the inferior and posterior edge of the eleventh dorsal, the body of the twelfth having nearly disappeared.
